Michael Anthony Torres
"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." 2 Timothy 4:7

Michael Anthony Torres heroically completed his journey on earth on March 30, 2024, at MDA Hospital, in the presence of his loving family - his wife, Mary Lou; his children Adrienne, Justin and daughter-in-law Christie. Notably, our beloved warrior was taken from us during Holy Week.

Michael was born on November 22, 1959, in Corpus Christi, Texas. He was the youngest of six who grew up to be a loving son, little brother, and uncle. He was named after St. Michael the Archangel, the fierce angelic warrior who teaches courage, strength, and valor in life's personal battles. The significance of the name "Michael" would foreshadow future life changing events in his life.

In 1976, a teenaged Michael met a teenaged Mary Lou Garcia who became his soulmate and partner in life. The teenage romance led to matrimony on November 5, 1983. The cornerstone of their forty-year union was Corinthians 16:14 "Do everything in love."

Michael was a humble and modest man whose greatest pride in life was being a husband, father, father-in-law, and grandfather. The Torres family dynamics provided an environment of deep love, devotion, loyalty, respect, and never-ending support. The family responded to Michael's paternal and teacher roles with awe and reverence.

After graduating from Mary Carroll High School, Michael attended Del Mar College where he discovered his computer technology aptitude. His number one class rank led to recruitment by American Bank where he embarked on a thirty-nine-year banking career beginning as a computer operator and retiring as a Senior IT Officer and Senior Officer. He was proud of his affiliation with American Bank because of its positive working environment and extraordinary familial bond.

As a member of the Corpus Christi Citizens Police Academy Alumni, Michael participated in classes he enjoyed despite his illness. He also enjoyed animals since childhood. Ten years ago, he rescued a Bichon Frise he bonded with and they immediately became inseparable. He affectionately named her "Bella" who misses him so that she still searches for him at home. Feeding the birds brought him happiness as did gazing at his aquarium. He went fishing mainly to relax and commune with nature.

Michael shared his Dad's enthusiasm for fast cars. Corvettes were his favorite for joy rides thus he joined the local Corvette Club and became a member.

Michael is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Mary Lou; proud son Justin (Christie); proud daughter Adrienne Denise; and his two adorable grandsons Aaron Anthony and Matthew Alexander Torres. He was "little brother" to Jesse (Alice) Avitua of Valinda, California; Eva Mae Mendoza; Gloria Jean (Carl) Praesel; Jo Ann (John) Torres; sister-in-law Mary Avitua; and "uncle" to numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents Sam and Guadalupe Ybarra Torres; his first-born-son Aaron Michael Torres; uncle Robert (Beto) Avitua; niece Maria Angelita Cerda; and nephews Robert Edward Mendoza and Daniel Cisneros, Jr.

Having the distinguished honor to serve as pallbearers are his nephews Vince Edward Benavides and Mark Hernandez; brother-in-law John Henry Castillo; and family friends Jacob Gomez, Michael Nurre, and Josh Pena. Honorary pallbearer will be long-time friend and "brother" Guy Dreier.

Thanksgiving and celebration of Michael's life and heroism will begin with Family Visitation from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at Corpus Christi Funeral Home.
