Helen Louise Jackson Ward of Portland, TX and longtime Corpus Christi resident, was called home to the Lord on June 22, 2018. She was 95. Helen was born on January 14, 1923 in Galveston, TX to Captain Robert Joseph Jackson and Elizabeth Mary Louise Watler Jackson.
Being the daughter of a naval captain, Helen spent her youth living by the sea in Galveston, TX, Tampa, FL and Nassau, Bahamas. After the loss of her father in World War II, she helped take care of her five younger siblings. Her family eventually settled in Beaumont, TX, where she graduated from Beaumont High School in 1940 and later met Reverend A. Arnott Ward, while he was associate pastor of Westminster Presbyterian Church. They married in 1948 at that same church.
She remained a dedicated pastor’s wife and faithful servant of the Lord, while alongside her husband, she served Westminster and Second Presbyterian Churches in Beaumont, Texas. In 1951, Helen gave birth to their daughter, and only child, Sandy.
Helen, Arnott, and Sandy then moved on to serve First Presbyterian in Rockport, TX from 1954-1959. In 1959 the family moved to Corpus Christi, Texas. In 1963, Helen helped organize Jackson Woods Presbyterian. In 1981 she assisted her husband in serving several churches - First Presbyterian, in Alice, TX for a time and then returned to First Presbyterian in Corpus Christi, TX where she lived the remainder of her life. She was very active in several women’s groups and bible studies at church.
She will always be remembered for her contagious laugh, devoted love for friends and family, and her service to God, the church and her community. She is adored and missed by all of her extended family and many beloved friends.
Helen is preceded in death by her husband Reverend A. Arnott Ward, her parents, her daughter Sandra ‘Sandy’ Davidson, sister Ruby Jackson Turner, brother Theodore ‘Ted’ Jackson, brother-in-laws Jack Turner and Bill Purcell, sister-in-law Theta Jackson, and her close companion James ‘Pete’ Jones.
Left to cherish her memory are her son-in-law Billy Davidson of Portland, TX, her grandson Robert Davidson (Angela) of Austin, TX, and granddaughter Katie Rothlisberger (Lee) of Portland, TX; siblings Henry ‘Woody’ Jackson (Jean) of La Verne, CA, Robert Jackson of Houston, TX and Sally Purcell of Shenandoah, TX. Also surviving are her sister-in-law Maria Jackson of Maryland, nephews Patrick Purcell of Shenandoah, TX, Robert Jackson (Mary Ann) of Cypress, TX, and Mark Jackson of Maryland, and niece Kathryn Purcell Miller (David) of Shenandoah, TX; great-grandchildren Hayden, Kynlee, and Paislie, as well as many great-nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service to honor her life will be held on Thursday, June 28, 2018 at First Presbyterian Church at 11:00 am.
