Gerald Lerma

April 13, 1970 ~ June 14, 2018 (age 48) 48 Years Old

Obituary

Gerald Lerma was born on April 13, 1970. In his short, 48 years of life, he touched the hearts of many, many people. He never met a stranger. During a conversation with Gerald, he had the innate ability to make you feel as if you were the only person on this earth and whatever you were saying to him was the most important thing on his agenda that day. He was truly one of a kind. He had a great sense of humor, a quick wit about him and was as mischievous as a 5 year old boy. His favorite Bible verse coincided with the month and day of his birth: I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me - Philippians 4:13.

Gerald was an active and beloved Parishioner of Holy Family Catholic Church, here in Corpus Christi. At Holy Family he held the position of Lector for the Knights of Columbus, Council #10931, before his illness he was the Coordinator for the ExtraOrdinary Ministers of the Eucharist, he was a Minister to the Home Bound, he was a Catechist, a PTO Officer for Holy Family School, a member of the ACTS Team, our Festival Coordinator and Director for our Live Passion Play during the Lenten Season for many years and a member of our Pastoral Council. Gerald was also in Diaconate Formation with the Diocese of Corpus Christi.
He was a softball coach for Sparkling City Fast Pitch Softball League and then went on to coach the select team for Corpus Christi Fire Fast Pitch. He was avid fan of the Texas Rangers and Texas Longhorns and a very proud member of the Mighty Miller Buccaneer Show Band where he held the title of Drum Major from 1987 – 1988. Gerald enjoyed playing softball, street hockey and Team Roping with his horse “Emiliano ‘Emo’ Zapata”.

On August 24, 1996, he married the love of his life Genevive and to this union in 2004, they welcomed their daughter Gianna. Gianna was the apple of her Daddy’s eye. He often referred to himself as “Big G” and Gianna was “Little G”. He spoiled his “women” as often as he could. Gerald said many times during his illness Genevive was the “real MVP”, she was the true hero for devoting herself to his care 24/7. Gerald made sure to leave them with many happy memories of trips to different cities, festivals and events. Even during the course of his illness, they made trips and memories.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Genevive Lerma, his daughter Gianna Lerma, his Mother, Janie Torres and his Brother, Adam Torres, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many, many friends.
Gerald was a warrior as he battled this illness for over a year. He never wanted sympathy, only prayers. Cancer did not win this battle because it never took his spirit. We will miss you forever Gerald.
