Frank M. Mendez, 87, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on September 11, 2023. Frank was born on March 10, 1936, to Jose and Prisca Mendez, in Puebla, Puebla, Mexico. At 21 years of age, he became a naturalized citizen.
Frank was a diligent worker, retiring from Reynolds Metals Company after 30 years. He was a bricklayer, masonry craftsman, and Briquetter operator. Frank enjoyed traveling with his family and vacationing with his wife, Virginia. He was an exceptional billiards competitor. Entertained by sports, he coached little league baseball and women’s softball and played sports including baseball, volleyball, and Senior softball.
Family was always a priority. He was a devoted son, loving husband, and dedicated father and grandfather. He gave sound advice and taught his children to work hard and enjoy life. Frank was never at a loss for words, always telling stories that made you laugh. He enjoyed gathering with family at West Guth, Hazel Bazemore, and under the Harbor Bridge, playing volleyball or baseball.
Frank is preceded in death by Virginia Mendez, his beloved wife of 68 years; his children, Oscar Francisco Mendez and Gloria Forshey; son-in-law, Gerardo Saldaña. Grandchildren Jack Henry Igou and Cristina Elena Arzuaga, his parents, Jose and Prisca Mendez, and siblings, Beatrice Capetillo, Helen Medina, Joe Mendez, Jr., Raul Mendez, and Cruz Mendez.
Frank is survived by his children, Francisco Mendez Jr. (Mary Lou), Esther Saldaña, Roberto Mendez (Angie), Amelia Mendez, and Maria Mendez-Igou (Harland). Grandchildren, Marcos Forshey (Susan), Miguel Forshey (Natty), John Rodriguez, Frank Mendez III (Delia), Irene Rodriguez (John Henry), Elizabeth Adame, Ben De Leon, Misty Buccolo (Logan), Isaac Jordan Garza, Isabel Arzuaga, Mia Arzuaga, Alejandro Arzuaga, Adriana Sophia Igou, Emily K. Igou. Great Grandchildren, Mariana Rodriguez, Michael Rodriguez, Matthew Ledesma, Jace Ryan Ortiz, Benjamin De Leon, Victoria De Leon, Mateo Trevino, Karleigh Trevino, Gavin Buccolo, Trystan Buccolo, Kellan Buccolo, Skylen Buccolo, and Olivia Joy Garza. His great-great-granddaughter, Natallia Amora Rodriguez. His siblings, Rudy Mendez and Celia Mendez, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 5 pm – 9 pm on September 18, 2023, at Corpus Christi Funeral Home. A rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm that same evening. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church on September 19, 2023, at 10 am. Interment to follow at Rosehill Cemetery.
