Obituary

Bertha Mae Limuel Barnes, received her crown on June 11, 2022 in her home in Corpus Christi, Texas. She was born in Bastrop, Texas on September 25, 1928 to the late parents of I.V. Limuel Sr. and Velma Hyder Limuel. She loved dearly her stepmothers Christine Rogers and Ruby Lee Turner “God-mother” who both had a great influence on her life.
At a very young age she moved to Corpus Christi and gave her life to Christ. She was a proud graduate of Solomon M. Coles High School. She was united in holy matrimony to Felmon Barnes on May 29, 1948 and together they were blessed with five children.
She began her 13-year career at the Corpus Christi Naval Air Station in 1957. From there, Bertha committed 35 years of employment with the Corpus Christi Country Club and retired on March 27, 1992.
Bertha belonged to a few social clubs such as “ The Grands” and “Friday Night Gang” that were founded by she and several longtime friends. Together they created regular fellowships and family vacations. She found great joy in hosting social gatherings with the ladies. Their bond was an inseparable and strong sisterhood.
During her younger days she competed in several bowling leagues and was known as one of the best. In her leisure time she enjoyed hanging out at the senior center playing bridge. She was always ready for a game of pokeno, dominoes and scrabble. She was a champ at solving crossword and sudoku puzzles.
She was a longtime member of St. Matthew Baptist church until her health declined. She will be remembered for her faith, elegance, gentle spirit, smile, perseverance, and loving heart.
Bertha Barnes was preceded in death by her parents I.V. Limuel Sr. and Velma Hyder Limuel, Christine Rogers, Ruby Lee Limuel, Ivy Limuel Jr., Julius Limuel, and Jessie James Limuel (brothers) Felmon Barnes (spouse), and Felmon Ray Barnes (son).
She leaves to cherish her precious memories son, Marvin Barnes of San Antonio, Texas, daughter, Shirley A. Jackson (Samuel), son, Richard Barnes, daughter, Jacqueline C. Marcee (Harold) of Corpus Christi, Texas, fourteen grandchildren: twenty-one great-grand children, one great-great grandchild, two nieces Glenda Hale (Percy) & Ivy Limuel Thomas (Kenneth), one nephew Stephanine Limuel ( Shanta) two cousins: Major Burke of Austin Texas and Wilbert Haywood of Corpus Christi, Texas and host of relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday, June 17, 2022 at St. Matthew Baptist Church (1101 Waco St.). Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM that same morning. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Park.
