Hard to imagine. It was forty-three years ago this stranger’s education began.

Intimidated by the prospect of encountering Laura’s outsized family, I reluctantly accepted her 1974 invitation to meet her parents and seven younger siblings (Luis, the oldest had already left for law school). My trepidation notwithstanding, within ten minutes of our arrival at their home, I had the tentative acceptance of Poncho (the toughest Beagle to ever stare down a rattle snake), a lapful of kids with their arms around my neck, my first “horn” poured by their jazz-loving father, and the warm embrace of the family’s matriarch Helen. “Hijo!” she burbled as, for the first of many times, she cradled my face between her outstretched hands. Thus commenced my understanding of “la familia.”

Over the years her humor, warmth, kindness and generosity only grew. I watched as her guiding hand molded her children’s’ characters. “Best friends” best describes the relationships she fostered among them. Under her tutelage, honesty, loyalty, consideration and devotion to others’ needs became their hallmarks – and her legacy.

Helen’s passage was not an easy one. Throughout her long, grinding descent she was lovingly and tenderly cared for by those children. In particular, Jim, Paul and Albert sacrificed in order to comfort her. They demonstrated the qualities she devoted her life to instilling in them in order to provide her with the only thing she sought – to die in her own bed in the house she built surrounded by the children she loved.

Rest in peace, Helen Prado Wilmot. Job well done!

The Wilmot Family

First, I wish to extend my deepest condolences on the passing of your Mother Helen.
There are far too many small and large memories of our times growing up on Petty Drive to put down in print here. The families of Petty Drive are well embedded in my thoughts here and are often reflected in how I live today from the teachings of our own parents. When we (Stevens family: George Jr., Patty Sue, Ben aka Butch, Robert aka J-Bird and Liza) gather and speak of our own parents and family times it is so much fun to include the past as how we grew up together with all the great neighboring families. Your mom much like our own stayed busy raising kids and correcting us when needed, God knows it took a special lady to handle all the clans of Petty Drive.

The words that I express here take me back to some fun times in our youth, I hope you can understand that the passing of your Mother has rekindled some beautiful past memories of both your parents. Your Mom watching over us as we played football on the street and baseball in your backyard, who can forget your Dad showing us how to Drop Kick the football from the front yard and My God every New Year bringing out that old Winchester rifle . In reading your words, it is very easy to see that there was beautiful Love that each of you shared with your Mom and she shared with you. Though times have changed now it is still clear the love that we as kids received from our parents still rings loud in each of you and yours, as I know that it does for us too.

My Prayers for each of you. God Bless.

My dear Aunt Helen,
What a honor to have been a small part of your life. Your beauty, smile, laughter, wittiness, and never ending patience are a few of many things that I admired so much about you. You were soft spoken yet never failed to be straight forward with all. The beautiful children you ( and Uncle Louis) raised are attributed to your total love and devotion you had for each and everyone of them.. I always loved visiting with you because you always told me how pretty I was ( lol) I will miss seeing your beautiful smile, but I know you are now reunited with all our families in Heaven. What a glorious thought that is! I love you, Aunt Helen. Rest in peace now. You are home!

Mom,
You were the angel here on Earth and now you have earned your Angel wings making you the perfect Angel in Heaven.
You taught me how to love unconditionally, to help others in need and to always think of my brothers and sister.
You always gave all to God and to your family, mom. I can see you now sitting on His right side watching over all of us. You are beautiful mom and always will be.
You made us laugh at your jokes and seeing your beautiful smile made me so happy to see how much you are appreciated and loved by all our children.
You wanted so much to go home, now you are there.
When you see dad and our boys in Heaven, they won’t be hard to find. They will be the ones greeting you first with open arms. Let them know how much we love and miss them.
It’s so hard to say goodbye mom. I will always keep you in my heart for you are the Angel in my life.
I love you mom, watch over us and give my love to all.

Dear Mom,

The Lord has granted me these last six years to be with you and care for you. I cherished every moment and learned a lot from you, mainly how to care and love others with deep compassion. I would not change this for the world, and would easily do it all over again. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to care for you. Now I can send you off to heaven, knowing I did everything I could for you. Please say hello to Dad, Mamo, and Aunt Sara.

Dear Mom,

I miss you, but know that you are with our children, Dad, your parents, and grandparents. I'm sure you had a happy reunion when you transitioned. I am so proud to be your daughter and so happy I was able to spend time with you before you left this world. It was a privilege and profound sacred honor to have been praying at your bed side when you transitioned. You left peacefully. By spending weeks here with you, I was able to personally witness the tremendous love and support you received from your wonderful caretakers, Paul and Jimmy, who cared for you for so many years, till the very end. I was also privileged to see each one of your children spend the night with you, caressing your cheek, praying and talking to you. Our family love bond is stronger than ever because of you. The tremendous love and light energy emanating from their hears and souls was so impressive to see and feel. Please know that we will each carry your love with us until eternity as mothers hold a special place in our hearts and stir emotions when their name is mentioned and remembered.
