Bernice A. Crecy, age 96, passed away on Thursday, February 15, 2018.
Bernice was born on October 5, 1921 to the late Jesse and Ethel Lewis Rhodes. Bernice attended Ball High School in Seguin, Texas, but graduated from Solomon M. Coles High School of Corpus Christi, Texas. Bernice would later attended Paul Quinn College then located in Waco, Texas where she received a degree in Education.
At an early age, Mrs. Crecy accepted Christ at the St. James Baptist Church in Seguin, Texas under the leadership of Rev. Kemple. She later joined Brooks Chapel AME of Corpus Christi, Texas, now Brooks AME Worship Center under the leadership of Pastor Adam T. Carrington and former Pastor Carl Gorman. While in good health, Mrs. Crecy was devoted to her church performing the duties of Steward, Trustee, Missionary, Decorations Committee, and Projects Planning Coordinator for various church events.
Bernice loved to entertain and host various types of family gatherings and celebrations. She affiliated with numerous civic and social organizations such as Toast Mistress Club of Corpus Christi where she served as treasurer in 1977; joined NAACP in 1970; served as treasurer for the Negro Professional Business Women’s Club of Corpus Christi, Texas to name a few.
While in Gifford, Florida, Mrs. Crecy taught elementary school. Bernice worked for Lichenstein Department Store after which she moved to the Godwin Shop. There she served as Head of the Receiving Department and as an Assistant to the buyer of clothing and many other duties. She flourished over 32 years under the ownership of Mr. Albert Lichenstein.
In 1970, Bernice and Irene Demerson became the first people of color to own and operate the Boutique Shoppe which featured women’s apparel in then Padre Staples Mall. Mrs. Crecy continued in retail, as a Sales Associate for Dillard’s Department Store from 1990 until retirement in 2000. Mrs. Crecy performed the duties of Wardrobe Consultant in 1980 for the Miss Black Corpus Christi Pageant.
Mrs. Crecy is survived by a sister, Mary Frances Rhodes Campbell (baby Sister); Niece, Shirley Lott Rhodes, Special Children, Phyllis Ridgels (Lewis) all of Corpus Christi, Texas; Carolyn Powell of Houston, Texas and Wanda Levingston (Charles “Wes”) of Victoria, Texas; 16 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren and 35 great great grandchildren; Six loving friends: Esther Garrett, Georgia Hughes, Belva Delgado, of Corpus Christi, Texas; Paula Martin (M.J.) of Upper Marlboro, Maryland.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Jesse and Ethel Lewis Rhodes; Sisters, Jesse Mae Ingram and Rosa Lee McKinney, brothers, Emmitt Dennis Rhodes, Sr. (Brother Boy), Willie Andres (Sonny) and Walter C. Rhodes (W.C.). Also preceded her in death, her first husband of 17 years Memphis James Crawford followed by Elmo Crecy the love of her life for 27 years until his death.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, February 23, 2018 at Corpus Christi Funeral Home with a Wake to be held at 7:00 p.m. that same evening.
A Funeral Service will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at Brooks Chapel Worship Center.
Interment to follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
