Andrew Reed Sanchez

June 30, 1923 ~ March 17, 2017 (age 93) 93 Years Old
Andrew “Andy” Sanchez, better known as PaPaw left this world on Friday, March 17, 2017 at the age of 93. Born in Mobile, Alabama to the late Andres and Mabel Sanchez. At the age of 19, he enlisted in the US Army Air Corps. One year later he met his first love, Willetta Stark in Pampa, Texas at the USO Dance. After a short courtship, they married on October 9, 1943. Papaw continued his training and became a P-51D fighter pilot. His love for aviation continued throughout his life. While still in the army, he and Willetta had three children and in 1945 received an honorable discharge.

He moved his family to Houston, Texas where he was employed with Humble Oil for over 30 years as a design draftsman. While attending a men’s retreat, he accepted Christ and began his eternal walk with Jesus. In 1962 PaPaw joined the masonic lodge Park Place Lodge 1172. He was raised as a master mason and worked in The Robe Degrees. He also joined the York and Scottish Rites. In 1965, while still working for Humble Oil (which late became Exxon), he was transferred to Corpus Christi and was promoted as Captain General.

In 1976, after 33 years of marriage, Andy lost his beloved wife, Willetta.

In 1978, he retired from Exxon and married his second love, Ginna. As a draftsman, he continued pursuing his passion and designed Disciple House Church, among his Plethora of other ideas, projects and crafts. He was active in his church and spread the word of God to all who would listen. His love for Israel became a passion in his later years. Supporting the cause, and educating his family with lively discussions and folders that contained hours of thought provoking research. Till his death, Papaw could always be found wearing his American and Israel flag lapel pin, and proudly stating to “Stand with Israel” for they are the chosen people.

You would often find him in his workshop building or at his desk drafting a new idea or balancing his checkbook. Always donning a baseball cap, dress shirt and smile, his loving and warm “Well hi there!” will be remembered by all. He is survived by his three children: son, Terran (Martha) Sanchez, daughter, Cheryl Smith and son, Mark (Dana) Sanchez; five grandchildren, Amy (Bryan) Sanchez, Matthew (Lisa) Patterson, Andrea (Abraham) DeLaGarza, Allison (Rey) Rodriguez, and Daniel Sanchez-Schmitt; 12 great- grandchildren; and one great-great grandson. Andy is preceded in death by his two wives, Willetta & Ginna and granddaughter Cory Patterson.

Interment will be Monday, March 27, 2017 at the Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery at 10:00 AM.
